The International Milling Directory (IMD) has had a rather a lot of attention recently. We made waves in Louisville with a successful event. Regular and new members were drawn towards our hundreds of copies of the IMD – the 6 boxes we shipped over were snapped up within 2 days, leaving latecomers on the final day with not a lot of availability!

VIV Asia took place in Bangkok in early March. A great honour of the opening reception was a mention for International Milling Directories’ owner and publisher Perendale and Roger Gilbert was a boon for us all back in the office. When we found out the feedback and invitation to chair more CropTech-FeedTech conferences at more VIV events around the world was relayed back, we were all proud of this opportunity in thought leadership. The next event in this series Roger is attending will be in the Netherlands.

The next event draws closer all the time and our build up, tools and ambitions for IDMA in Turkey are very high. This is a bi-annual event in Istanbul will take place over four days and we decided to ship 10 boxes of the IMD to this exciting event. Our large presence will be part of marketing the IMD to returning and new Turkish members and they will be able to see and ask for information about participation in the new edition. On that topic, we are expecting to redesign and improve the functionality of the IMD this year which makes it the leading publication in handbooks for the international milling community.

New companies in the IMD this month: Kay International (India), Aciklar Un Sanayi (Turkey), Jiangsu Myande Food Machinery Co. Ltd. (China) and Dan Corn (Denmark).

The last day saw the usual mix of educational sessions and time for exhibition attendees to visit the stands and catch up with each other, and the late afternoon was given over to GEAPS’s Annual Meeting.

The 84th annual technical expo has been a success, with 2,372 visitors and a record-breaking number of exhibitors. We’re expecting our own delegates to be back any minute now, so watch this space for our own IMD co-ordinator Tom Blacker’s opinions of the show, its attractions and its attendees.

IPPE – Two-day programme

2013 International Rendering Symposium to Focus on Using Rendered Product to Combat High Feed Costs

The International Rendering Symposium is returning to the 2013 International Production & Processing Expo.  This symposium will be sponsored by the National Renderers Association and U.S. Poultry & Egg Association, the symposium will focus on using rendered product to combat high feed costs. The two-day programme is $150 to all registered Expo attendees.

This year’s International Rendering Symposium will include a presentation by Bill Dieterichs, The Jacobsen Report, on The Economics of Rendered Product. Dr. Charles Starkey, American Proteins, will discuss Controlling Salmonella in Feed. A presentation on The Role of Rendered Products in Aquaculture Feeds will be presented by Dr. Sergio Nates; while Dr. Brian Kerr, USDA, will focus on Rendered Products for Feeding Swine, and Dr. Greg Aldrich, Kansas State University, will present on Rendered Products for Pet Food.

Programs topics will include an Overview of the North American Rendering Industry; Production Profile of Rendered Protein Meals in Latin America and Its Market Needs for the Pet Food Market; Innovation in the Rendering Industry; Rendering: A Green Industry; and other issue-specific subjects.

The 2013 IPPE, one of the world’s largest annual poultry, feed, and meat industry events, will be held from January 29-31, 2013, at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, GA. Canada Grain Act

haccp-engTo modernise agricultural policy and regulation, the Government of Canada conducted several industry consultations in recent years, particularly in areas of the Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) mandate and governance, user fees, producer security, service comportment and standards. On October 18, 2012, the federal government introduced the amendments to the Canada Grain Act (CGA), which was part of Bill C-45, Jobs and Growth Act, 2012. Bill C-45 received the royal assent and became law on December 14, 2012. The last major review of the CGA was done in the 1990s.

The agricultural industry generally sees the recent amendments to the CGA are necessary, mainly due to fundamental industry changes experienced during the last 10 to 20 years. For example, the number of primary elevators in Canada decreased to 344 in 2012 from 976 in 1999. Industry consolidation has resulted in a few major grain companies accounting for large shares of grain handling activities at both primary elevator and port terminal levels. Due to the integration of grain handling industry, grain received at port terminals often comes from the primary elevators owned by the same company. In the current system, the CGC will conduct a grading/weighing inspection, although the grain movement is simply within the same company. The CGC inspection services in the case seem redundant to many industry stakeholders. The consolidation of grain handling industry, coupled with the recent removal of the Canadian Wheat Board single desk, has led to the need for changes in agricultural policy and regulation.

The amendments to the CGA intend to streamline the CGC operation and eliminate redundant or unnecessary services. A major change is the elimination of mandatory requirements for inward inspection and weighing of grains by the CGC at port terminals and transfer elevators. Inward inspection is a practice of inspecting grain at port terminals or transfer elevators when the grain comes from a domestic grain handling facility, in most cases, primary elevator. Due to the integration of grain handling industry, primary elevators often ship grain to a port terminal or transfer elevator owned by the same company, reducing the need for inspection. If this is not the case and an inspection is necessary, the proposed new system would allow shippers and elevator operators to request weighing and grading by a private service provider authorized by the CGC. Based on the estimate from the federal government, the elimination of redundant services is expected to save about $20 million annually. Many industry stakeholders believe that agricultural producers bear all these costs in the end.

For the producer payment protection program, the CGC would introduce a new insurance-based system to replace the current single option of bonding. The federal government believes the new approach will improve producer protection coverage and reduce licensing costs.

The amendments to the CGA will also eliminate the grain-appeal tribunals. If grade/weight disputes occur, the proposed new system would allow producers and other industry stakeholders to request a binding determination of grade/weight by the CGC. The CGC would provide oversight and the office of the CGC Chief Grain Inspector would be the final decision-making authority for inspection services provided by the private sector. The CGC will continue to establish and maintain standards of Canadian grain quality, and particularly, safeguard the quality of grain for exports. As well, the CGC function in producer rail car administration will remain unchanged.

The CGC has just completed another round of industry consultation on user fees. Many producer organizations and industry stakeholders provided their input to the process. A summary of the consultation findings is available at the CGC website.

In the Budget 2012, the federal government has allocated $44 million over two years to allow the CGC to transition to the new model. The CGC will continue its current statutory functions until August 1, 2013 when the proposed changes and new user fees will take effect.

The U.S. Poultry & Egg Association and the USAPEEC International Poultry Development Program (UIPDP) are jointly sponsoring a new International Student Career Program at the 2013 IPE, part of the International Production & Processing Expo (IPPE). Held in conjunction with the long-standing USPOULTRY College Student Career Program, the new program has been created to provide companies with an opportunity to interview top students from various countries for industry jobs and internships in the poultry industry in one location.

“UIPDP is pleased to honour Henry Holler, one of the pioneers of our industry, by establishing the Henry L. Holler International Management Studies Fund to support this international student career program,” said UIPDP Chairman Eric Joiner of AJC International. “Henry was one the founders of the USA Poultry & Egg Export Council and served as the first chairman of UIPDP.”

“Several of our interviewing companies have locations outside of the United States and are looking for students to fill positions in various countries. We are excited to offer our interviewing companies an opportunity to meet and talk with these international students,” said John Starkey, President of USPOULTRY.

IPPE 2013 Update

International Production & Processing Expo

Exciting times are coming to Atlanta, Georgia, the week of January 28 – February 1, 2013, with the integration of three internationally recognized trade shows joining forces to bring suppliers and buyers together for education, technology exchange and networking encompassing the entire spectrum of farm to table.

The combination of the International Poultry Expo (IPE), International Feed Expo (IFE) and American Meat Institute’s International Meat Expo (IME) will bring in over 25,000 attendees from over 100 countries and over 1,000 exhibitors. The week will feature educational opportunities every day. In addition, the trade show, being held January 29 – 31, is anticipated to feature over 400,000 net square feet of exhibits, placing the show in the top 50 of all trade shows in the United States.

The addition of the American Meat Institute’s (AMI) International Meat Expo will expand the number of processing, further processing and packaging suppliers to the show. Additionally, AMI will be adding several educational programs that week to complement the sessions being offered by the U.S. Poultry & Egg Association and the American Feed Industry Association.

The show provides an excellent opportunity to see the latest developments and technology, get training and updates through the educational programs, and to network and meet people from all over the world to exchange experiences and ideas. This year will feature two networking receptions. On the opening day of the show (Tuesday, January 29), there will be a reception from 4 – 6 p.m. on the floor of the show. On Wednesday, back by popular demand, there be a reception at the Georgia Aquarium, the world’s largest enclosed aquarium.
